Team4Tech launches third cohort to help African education organisations integrate generative AI

From AI awareness to practical education applications

During the programme, participants will examine foundational AI concepts, assess potential education use cases and learn how to develop effective prompts.

They will also develop mission-aligned plans for implementing and sustaining AI tools within their education programmes, while exploring strategies for scaling AI solutions and training staff and educators to use the technology responsibly.

The third cohort builds on experiences from previous participants who have already begun applying generative AI to education challenges.

In Kenya, for example, Rising Hope Girls’ Education Foundation developed and piloted ReadBuddy, a low-bandwidth, voice-based AI reading companion designed to support early-grade literacy. According to Team4Tech, the tool helped 200 teachers reduce the time spent on administrative tasks by half.

In South Africa, Funda Wande enhanced an existing teacher-support WhatsApp chatbot by integrating generative AI. The resulting FundAi WhatsApp tool provides educators with support on lesson planning, literacy strategies and course guidance.

Zimbabwe Information and Technology Center, another previous participant, has also used its cohort experience to strengthen AI literacy and responsible-use guidance for teachers, learners, caregivers and community members, according to Team4Tech.

A growing focus on responsible AI in education

The programme comes as education organisations across Africa increasingly explore how generative AI can be used to improve teaching, learning and organisational efficiency, while also navigating questions around responsible use.

Team4Tech’s wider AI capacity-building programme includes peer learning, expert coaching, technology support and knowledge sharing aimed at helping education-focused nonprofits adopt AI in contextually relevant ways. Its broader Community of Practice currently connects more than 1,300 NGOs from over 100 countries.

For the new cohort, Team4Tech says the immediate focus will be on moving beyond experimentation with AI towards practical implementation plans that can support educators and learners.

The organisation said it will share further lessons from the cohort as participants apply their learning in education programmes across Africa.
