Caitlin Clark needed only one game to place her name in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup record book. Team USA named Clark its Player of the Game following Friday’s 94-61 victory over China in Berlin. The honor capped a nearly flawless tournament debut for the Indiana Fever guard.

Clark recorded 14 points, 11 assists and three rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench. She made three 3-pointers and did not commit a turnover while directing an American offense that shot 45 percent from the field. Paige Bueckers and Rhyne Howard also scored 14 points, while Jackie Young added 12. All 12 Team USA players scored as the defending champions extended their World Cup winning streak to 31 games.

However, Clark’s ability to create easy opportunities for that deep collection of talent separated her performance from the rest.

Caitlin Clark breaks Team USA record

Clark’s 11 assists were the most ever by an American player making her Women’s World Cup debut, according to FIBA.

The previous record belonged to Alyssa Thomas, who distributed nine assists against Belgium in her 2022 tournament debut. Clark also became the first player from any country to record at least 10 assists without committing a turnover in a Women’s World Cup game since assists and turnovers began being officially tracked in 1994.

Her 11 assists tied for the sixth-highest single-game total in tournament history over that span. Dawn Staley owns the American single-game record with 12 assists against Russia in 1998.

Team USA coach Kara Lawson praised Clark for changing the pace of the game after coming off the bench. That impact arrived almost immediately, as Clark distributed four assists within her first four minutes on the floor. China had no reliable answer for her passing. When defenders attempted to contain Clark on the perimeter, she penetrated the defense and found an open teammate. When China shifted into a zone to protect 7-foot-3 center Zhang Ziyu, Clark located the openings before they could close.

The result was a performance that combined her familiar creativity with remarkable control.

Clark gives Team USA another powerful weapon

Clark’s debut showed why Team USA could become even more difficult to defend as the tournament progresses. She did not need to dominate the ball or lead the team in shot attempts. Surrounded by elite scorers, Clark used the attention she attracts to generate quality opportunities across the roster.

Her transition from WNBA star to international playmaker appeared seamless. The performance was also an encouraging early sign for Lawson, who can bring Clark off the bench without sacrificing pace or offensive organization. Few teams can match Team USA’s starters, and Friday demonstrated that the second unit may be just as difficult to contain.

Team USA led China 27-14 after the opening quarter and never trailed. The Americans eventually built a 35-point advantage before completing the 33-point victory.

Clark and Team USA will face Italy on Sunday at 2:45 p.m. ET in their second Group D game. They will conclude group play against Czechia on Monday. If Clark’s debut was any indication, her first official Team USA honor of the tournament may not be her last.
