Taylor Townsend reportedly had emergency surgery

American tennis player Taylor Townsend, who won the 2026 US Open doubles title with Katerina Siniakova days ago, reportedly had emergency surgery.

Townsend was in the singles draw of the WTA Guadaljara Open tournament. She was set to play Marta Kostyuk on Wednesday when she withdrew from the event.

With Siniakova, Townsend’s win at the 2026 US Open completed her career Grand Slam in women’s doubles.

Townsend acknowledged her health issue on social media.

She admitted that it broke her heart to withdraw from Guadalajara, but in light of emergency surgery, it was medically necessary.

The tennis season is far from over. A saving grace is that Townsend and Siniakova have already qualified for the WTA Finals. If Townsend needs a longer recovery time, they do not have to play the fall Asian swing to get into the event.

Townsend has been playing singles and rising in the singles rankings. That may have been a goal for fall.

Townsend said that she would provide more details later. It is unclear if she had the surgery in Guadalajara or came back to the United States to have the procedure done.

We could speculate that a gall bladder or appendix issue could be the cause. Those would manifest quickly and require surgical resolution.

Hopefully Townsend is on the road to recovery and will return to a tennis court in the near future.
