Taylor Sheridan's Longest-Running Western Series Makes Yellowstone Look Tame

Her work blends wit with insight, making readers feel like they’re chatting with a friend who just happens to know way too much about TV.

Over the course of his career, Taylor Sheridan has built a television empire around the American West, and his longest-running Western show isn’t the iconic Yellowstone, which looks tame by comparison. His approach to the Western genre has never been limited to traditional cowboy stories, which is what makes Sheridan’s lens such an interesting vantage point. Rather than focusing on the standard tropes of Westerns, the mastermind behind revitalizing the genre hones in on the intense emotions of family feuds, territorial disputes, and the brutal realities of ranching in a specific, modern way to bring the genre into today’s world.

Sheridan has had his hand in several series that have brought the Western sensibility into the modern era, making it clear that there’s a demand for the style and stories that come from the genre regardless of when they’re being told. While Yellowstone remains Sheridan’s most recognizable series and has become a wider franchise with its prequel shows, 1883 and 1923, along with its spinoff series’ Dutton Ranch and Marshals, it isn’t the most on-the-nose Western that Sheridan’s created. Unlike the wider Yellowstone universe, Sheridan’s unscripted Western isn’t as palatable to the everyday viewer, in part because of its intensity.

The Last Cowboy, Sheridan’s documentary-style series that sees real competitors pursuing Western equine sports, looks at the genuine cowboys in a new light, taking a real-world approach to the high-pressure that comes with elite horse training. Returning for another season soon, Sheridan’s lesser-known project is one of his most defining.

The Last Cowboy Being Real Adds A Gritty Edge Yellowstone Can Never Have

Although Yellowstone will always be the series that brought Sheridan into the mainstream, The Last Cowboy is a series that will always feature a grittier edge than the scripted show by nature of it being a competition series. The Last Cowboy looks at the sometimes harsh realities of Western equine sports, which gives it a particularly specific point of view. While Yellowstone can depict danger in a way without genuine stakes, The Last Cowboy is full of reality, which means the danger the cast is facing feels far more real and intense. With true professionals competing, the CMT series is vastly different.

The Last Cowboy’s competitors focus on reining, cutting, and cow horse, and each discipline has its own set of specific rules, which makes the competition all the more interesting to dive into. The professional competitors that are documented on the show spend years developing their skills, training their horses, and preparing for events that are make or break for their reputations. Seeing them compete on The Last Cowboy often allows them to show off just how skilled they are, and allows viewers to see the true professionals navigate the complex pressures of a highly-demanding sport that often rests on a singular performance.

The Last Cowboy’s 7-Season Run Is An Impressive Feat

As Sheridan continues to branch out in his TV empire with shows like Landman and Lioness creating different sub-genres for him to dive into, many have stuck with Yellowstone and its spinoffs for the breadth of the franchise. While Yellowstone ran for five intense seasons, Sheridan fans would likely be surprised to know that The Last Cowboy has been on the air for a whopping seven seasons, and doesn’t appear to be slowing down. Airing on CMT and streaming on Paramount+, the smaller, more niche show having such a long run is impressive in its own right, and in competition with Sheridan’s TV universe.

The Last Cowboy’s release schedule may be part of what’s helped it to maintain longevity, as the series has been airing annually for the past several years. While it premiered in the summer of 2019, the series has come out in November of each year since 2021, and will continue the tradition with its upcoming seventh season. With the upcoming season of The Last Cowboy shining a spotlight on Sheridan’s own Bosque Ranch, there’s even more of a tether between the creator and the series, making its impression even more lasting. With seven seasons and the potential for more The Last Cowboy is Sheridan’s true hidden gem.
