Taraba gov signs executive orders against political thuggery, illegal mining, drug abuse

Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has signed three executive orders aimed at tackling political thuggery, illegal mining and drug abuse across the state.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Re-orientation, Zainab Jalingo, on Sunday.

Speaking on the order against drug abuse, Kefas said the growing problem is contributing to crime, violence and social problems in the state.

According to him, “Drug abuse remains one of the greatest threats to the future of our young people. It fuels insecurity, destroys families, undermines productivity, and exposes communities to various forms of crime.”

He added that the executive order would give authorities stronger powers to prevent, monitor and prosecute drug-related offences while supporting awareness campaigns, rehabilitation programmes and youth development.

On political thuggery, the governor said the order became necessary as political campaigns draw closer. He stressed that his administration would not allow anyone to threaten the peace and security the state currently enjoys.

“The executive order prohibits the recruitment, sponsorship, financing, harbouring, or use of political thugs by any individual, group, or political interest,” he said.

According to him, the order is designed to reduce election-related violence, intimidation, destruction of property and other unlawful acts.

Kefas also raised concerns over the activities of illegal miners, loggers and other unauthorised operators, saying they have damaged the environment, destroyed farmland and polluted water sources while putting the lives and livelihoods of residents at risk.

He said the executive order would strengthen efforts to stop the illegal exploitation of natural resources, promote environmental protection and safeguard communities where legitimate mining activities take place.

The governor called on residents, traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, political stakeholders and civil society organisations to support the implementation of the executive orders to help maintain peace, security and development in Taraba State.
