On Wednesday afternoon, the Big Ten Conference unveiled the complete conference schedules for the women’s and men’s basketball seasons. The Michigan women’s basketball team already knew its home and away opponents, but now the exact dates are confirmed.
Those opponents are further broken down, as in prior analysis, into:
Indiana, Iowa, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers, Washington, Oregon
Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, Purdue, Wisconsin, UCLA, Southern California
Key home conference opponents remain Iowa (No. 4 in ESPN’s too-early rankings), Ohio State (No. 18) and Michigan State, particularly from a rivalry standpoint. Key away opponents remain UCLA, USC, Maryland and Illinois.
Here are some takeaways from the Wolverines’ conference slate now that the dates of the games are known:
- There is no “easing” into the Big Ten season. Michigan faces a perennial March Madness team in the Terrapins very early on and will be tested throughout the season. With only one chance to face all opponents, other than Michigan State, each game will be important as the Wolverines aim to secure their first-ever regular-season Big Ten championship.
- Two of Michigan’s three biggest home games during the conference season occur during the school’s academic winter break. Winter term classes do not begin until Wednesday, Jan. 13, meaning many students will miss high-profile matchups against the Spartans on Dec. 29 and the Buckeyes on Jan. 7. Those two rivalry games could have been opportunities to engage the student fanbase, so from a scheduling perspective, that is disappointing.
The West Coast trip comes at a difficult time in the season. In 2024-25, Michigan traveled over the academic winter break to California to face the Bruins and the Trojans, providing ample travel cushion on either end of the tough contests. With those games now occurring during the academic calendar year and just two days after the home game against the Nittany Lions on Jan. 27, the scout preparation and travel time makes the already-tough opponents a harder matchup.

Michigan is slated to be one of the top teams in the Big Ten, even with starting point guard Mila Holloway out indefinitely with a left lower-leg injury. The Wolverines’ schedule is a reminder there is no “easy road” through arguably the nation’s strongest women’s basketball conference. Whoever emerges at the top of the Big Ten will be battle-tested and prepared for March Madness.
