Dominik Szoboszlai has signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool, ending speculation that he could be a transfer target for Real Madrid.
Szoboszlai arrived at Anfield in 2023, having left RB Leipzig in a deal worth a reported £60m (€70.5m), and has since established himself as a key player for the Reds.
He made 36 Premier League appearances under Arne Slot in 2024-25 as Liverpool became champions of England for the 20th time.
And though the Reds’ performances declined in 2025-26, with their fifth-place Premier League finish leading to Slot’s dismissal and the appointment of Andoni Iraola, Szoboszlai remained consistent.
Across all competitions, Szoboszlai registered a team-high 25 goal involvements (13 goals, 12 assists) in 53 games – only Virgil van Dijk and Alexis Mac Allister (both 55) played more often for Liverpool last term.
The Hungary captain’s previous contract with the Reds was due to expire in 2028, opening the door to a potential move to Madrid if they were unable to agree fresh terms by next year, while Bayern Munich were also said to be interested.
But he has now committed his future to Liverpool, with reports suggesting his new deal – which the club only described as “long-term” – will run for five years.
“It’s maybe my biggest day. There are a couple in front of it – probably when I signed for Liverpool the first time and when I got my baby, of course. But in my football career, I can say this is in the top three,” Szoboszlai told the club’s website.

“I can’t wait to go again and again and again. There’s always more to come. I think I can do even better.
“I think that’s why I’m sitting here, because that pushed me since I was a kid – that it was never enough. And I’m thinking the same now.
“When I signed, I said I want to win everything. That didn’t change for a moment, either.
“It stayed the same: I want to win everything that is possible in this country, also let’s say the Champions League. I’m ready to go for it.”
Liverpool open their Premier League campaign away to Newcastle United on August 23, with fixtures against Nottingham Forest, Ipswich Town, Fulham and Bournemouth to come prior to the first international break of 2026-27.
