Suspected cultists shoot 100-level IAUE student, SUG week suspended

The Rivers State Police Command had earlier confirmed Monday’s initial clash, identifying it as a violent confrontation between two rival cult factions.

When contacted regarding Wednesday’s campus shooting, the Police Public Relations Officer for the command, ASP Blessing Agabe, acknowledged seeing the viral video footage.

She stated that she was contacting the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the jurisdiction to gather formal operational details before issuing a full public statement.

A formal follow-up report from the state police command remains pending.

University Management Suspends SUG Week and Mandates Lectures

In a swift administrative response to the rising insecurity, the management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education has ordered the immediate suspension of all remaining activities scheduled for the 2026 Students’ Union Government (SUG) Week.

The directive was contained in an official statement issued in Port Harcourt on Wednesday by the Registrar of the institution, Dr Chinonye Ajie.

To restore order and institutional routine, management directed all students to return to their respective lecture halls on Thursday, August 13, 2026, for normal academic activities, warning that absenteeism would attract strict disciplinary sanctions.

The official statement read:

“This is to inform the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education community that all remaining activities for the Students’ Union Government (SUG) Week have been suspended by the University Management with immediate effect.

“Students are therefore advised to return to classes on Thursday, August 13, 2026, for normal academic activities. Any student who fails to attend lectures will be held responsible for their actions.

“Students are also strongly warned to desist from any action that is inimical to their academic pursuits and the peace of the University.”
