Super Eagles: Chelle speaks on World Cup, AFCON 2025 disappointments

Super Eagles head coach, Éric Chelle has once again expressed regret with his team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, DAILY POST reports.

Chelle also apologised for his team’s failure to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria won’t be part of the party at the 2026 World Cup finals which will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and USA next month.

The Super Eagles lost to Democratic Republic of Congo 4-3 on penalities in the final of the African playoffs.

Chelle’s men also fell short at the AFCON 2025 finals in Morocco earlier in the year.

The three-time champions finished third at the competition.

The Super Eagles however successfully defended their Unity Cup title after a comfortable 3-0 victory over Jamaica at the Valley, London on Saturday night.

Speaking after the game, Chelle thanked Nigerians for supporting him, and the team.

“I want to once again say sorry we didn’t go to the World Cup, this is my feeling, sorry we didn’t win the AFCON, I tried to do my job, the 48-year-old stated.

“I want to say thank you for all the support that was put in the team and once again I will give everything to this national team.”
