Sunderland, Spurs reach £25m agreement for Kevin Danso

Hold me closer, tiny Danso. Big Kev, the subject of much speculation and numerous falling dominos in yesterday’s penultimate day of the transfer window, is heading UP NORF to Sunderland, initially on loan with a purchase obligation.

Danso’s obligation fee is £25m which honestly is a good fee for a guy we spent £20m to purchase last season after an initial loan from Lens. Kevin hasn’t made it clear exactly why he wanted out of Spurs and to a team that many are suggesting will regress, but it’s not hard to figure out. He’ll be a backup at Spurs this season and quite possibly a starter or rotation option at Sunderland, a club that’s in the Europa League this season after overachieving significantly.

£25m isn’t a lot in the context of the insane Premier League transfer prices we’ve seen this summer, but it’s still a good deal and a small profit for a Spurs player that asked to be sold and was never a starter to begin with. Spurs are losing him and his aerial ability in front of goal, and that will hurt, but with the £7m addition of Tosin Adarabioyo (very likely) coming today, Spurs will at least have a full compliment of senior defenders that De Zerbi can choose from.
