Summer Recruiting Roundup: A Flurry of Commitments

While last week was a lot of bad news for Penn State, things took a turn for the better on the recruiting trail in recent days. Sometimes it needs to be so over before we can be so back.

Class of 2028 kicker Carter Petri made the call for Penn State this week, becoming just the second committed prospect in that class for Matt Campbell. Petri hails from New York and is ranked as a 4.5-star recruit by Kohl’s, earning him the No. 9 ranking in his class.

The Nittany Lions had a solid run of specialists toward the end of James Franklin’s tenure, notably producing NFL star Jordan Stout. This is a good start for Campbell, who has already convinced Ryan Barker, who missed just one field goal in 2025, to return for the 2026 season.

Penn State went down south this week to nab four-star linebacker Case Alexander, whose older brother, Cooper, came over from Iowa State with Campbell. He’s a top-10 player from Oklahoma in his class and was a massive target for the Nittany Lions’ recruiting staff. This is a massive get for the new regime, which had a few bad misses last week.

His name also rocks. Case Alexander — that’s a linebacker.

Penn State earned the commitment of three-star cornerback Dhillon McGee Thursday night, further bolstering its 2027 class. Pat had the full write-up, but this was a big get for Terry Smith and Campbell.

After trending away from Penn State over the past week, four-star wideout Deshawn Hall officially made the call for his hometown Auburn Tigers. No need to re-litigate this, but it is now official.

Penn State hosted its unofficial Elite BBQ this past weekend, reportedly drawing in a decent list of names. One of the most notable attendees was Class of 2028 four-star edge rusher Cam Toomey, who’s the No.1 player in the state of New York. While he’s young, he’s a bona fide rising star and is a true candidate to earn five-star status. He recorded 10 TFLs, five sacks, 19 QB hurries, and five PBUs in his sophomore season.

He already has offers from the likes of Alabama, Florida, Ohio State, and Notre Dame, but seems to be trending toward staying closer to home.
