‘Stranger Things’ Officially Returns to Netflix in 2028

In the last 10 years since becoming the biggest streaming service in the world, Netflix has released dozens, if not hundreds of popular sci-fi shows. However, the one that trumps them all is Stranger Things, which aired five full seasons over the course of 10 years. The show finally came to an end last year, with the series finale even airing in theaters on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, earning millions and proving that Netflix could bring its most popular properties to the big screen. It didn’t take Netflix long to bring back Stranger Things with its first animated spin-off, Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, which is set between the events of Seasons 2 and 3. The series returned for Season 2 in the same year, but the fate of the show for Season 3 has not yet been decided.

Still, since the Stranger Things finale earlier this year, fans have been waiting on pins and needles for news about the franchise’s return in live-action. It was expected that it would come back at some point, but in what form it was unclear, at least until this morning. Netflix shocked the world by officially announcing the first live-action Stranger Things spin-off, which will leave Hawkins behind and be set in the town of Marion, Indiana. The streamer released the first brief teaser for the new series this morning, titled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, also confirming that it is scheduled to be released in 2028. Casting is being kept under wraps for now, but it will be co-created by Kate Trefry and the Duffer Brothers, Ross and Matt, with Joe Wright directing. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but it is confirmed to be a prequel series set in the 1950s.

  • The Wachowskis’ 1999 film won four Academy Awards, including Visual Effects and Film
    Editing.
  • Bullet time was shot with a rig of roughly 120 still cameras firing in sequence around the
    actors.
  • Keanu Reeves trained in martial arts for about four months before a frame was shot,
recovering from neck surgery the whole time.
  • It opened the same year as Fight Club and eXistenZ, in a run of films about not trusting the
    world in front of you.
  • Mad Max: Fury Road won six Academy Awards in 2016, more than any other film that year.
  • George Miller storyboarded the entire film as roughly 3,500 panels before there was a
    script.
  • The chase was shot almost entirely practical in the Namib Desert, with real vehicles and
    real stunt performers.
  • Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth carried the prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, in 2024.
  • Blade Runner 2049 won Roger Deakins his first Oscar for cinematography, on his fourteenth
    nomination.
  • The film also took Best Visual Effects, 35 years after Ridley Scott’s 1982 original.
  • Villeneuve shot it on large-format film and kept the fog and rain practical on set wherever
    he could.
  • Three short films by Luke Scott and Shinichiro Watanabe bridge the 30-year gap between the
    two movies.
  • Denis Villeneuve’s Dune won six Academy Awards in 2022, including Cinematography and
    Original Score.
  • Hans Zimmer turned down Christopher Nolan’s Tenet so he could score Dune instead.
  • Dune: Part Two arrived in 2024 and brought in Austin Butler, Florence Pugh and Christopher
    Walken.
  • David Lynch’s 1984 version and Alejandro Jodorowsky’s unmade one are both their
    own legends by now.
  • The 1977 original won six Academy Awards plus a special achievement award for sound effects.
  • John Williams’ score was recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra and became the
    best-selling symphonic film soundtrack ever.
  • Andor took the galaxy somewhere colder and earned Emmy nominations for drama series in both
    seasons.
  • The saga now runs across eleven feature films and a growing shelf of series on Disney+.

Is Shawn Levy Coming Back for ‘Other World: A Stranger Things Adventure’?

“All of us at 21Laps are thrilled and privileged to be continuing the storytelling legacy of Stranger Things. With Other Worlds, the Duffer Brothers and Kate Trefry craft a new ensemble and adventure that is imbued with the DNA of our flagship series while exploring a new era, setting and all-new characters, themes and mythology — the seeds of which may have been planted in Hawkins, but now venture into other worlds of spectacle, action and emotion.”

Levy also recently directed Deadpool & Wolverine for Marvel back in 2024, which was the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever until the release of The Odyssey earlier this year. He’s also been tapped to direct the new Star Wars movie coming to theaters next year, and he’s reuniting with Ryan Gosling for Marvel’s Ghost Rider movie, which opens in theaters in 2028.
