Storm threat puts San Antonio-area high school football games on alert

It’s looking like it’s going to be a wet week in the San Antonio area. Beginning on Wednesday, September 30, San Antonio, the Interstate 35 corridor and the Texas Hill Country are all facing the threat of heavy rains and flash flooding, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). As a result, some San Antonio schools are already tweaking this week’s football schedules.

Central Catholic High School shared in a Facebook post on Monday, September 28, that Central Catholic’s homecoming game against St. Pius X has moved the kickoff time to 6 p.m. on Friday, October 2, to avoid expected inclement weather.

“The safety of our athletes, coaches and fans is our top priority, and we appreciate your understanding,” Central Catholic wrote in the Facebook post.

NWS has the San Antonio area under a level 3 of 4 risk for heavy rain that could lead to flash flooding. The flood watch lasts through this Friday and could impact teams across the area. However, most are still waiting to decide later in the week.

Judson ISD, Harlandale ISD, Southside ISD and Comal ISD all confirmed with MySA that no changes have been made as of Tuesday morning, September 29. Judson ISD added that any changes would come later in the week and would be shared across social media.

Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD is luckily on a bye week; meanwhile, Cornerstone Christian is playing St. John’s in Washington, D.C.

Boerne is on a bye week, while Boerne Champion is playing in Lockhart, so any changes would be a game-day decision, Boerne ISD shared.

Alamo Heights is playing at Long Creek High School of New Braunfels ISD, while Holy Cross is at New Braunfels Christian Academy. MySA has reached out to both schools about the status of this week’s games.

MySA has also reached out to San Antonio ISD, South San ISD, Northside ISD, Northeast ISD and Antonian College Preparatory High School to see if any changes are being made to their respective schedules.
