During the New York Knicks‘ 12-game winning streak going into Monday night’s Game 3 of the NBA Finals, Karl-Anthony Towns was a focal point of the team’s offense as a playmaker and facilitator.
As the streak came to an end with their loss to the San Antonio Spurs, it was Jalen Brunson who dominated the game for New York. Captain Clutch tied Victor Wembanyama with a game-high 32 points on 11-of-25 shooting, while Towns was held to just 11 points and one assist.
That’s exactly why New York loss, according to Stephen A. Smith, who said Brunson appeared to be playing for the MVP.
“Tonight, it looked like he was playing to be the MVP rather than playing to win Game 3,” Smith said. “Twenty-five shots in the time that he played. Karl-Antony Towns only gets 10 attempts, four in the second half. How does that happen?…
“You’re shooting about 34 percent from the field. About 24 percent from 3-point range. Why in God’s name would you continue to shoot, shoot, shoot when you’ve got cats around you who are capable of making shots. Not to mention the fact that that’s what got you here.”

He’s not completely wrong. And considering Towns’ climb into the MVP picture after Game 2, it’s not a bad theory.
