Mike Tomlin provided an insightful critique on Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offense following their 20-3 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday afternoon.
Rodgers started the final year of his legendary NFL career, hoping for one last playoff run before hanging up the jersey for good. However, that objective will be difficult if the offense goes through inconsistent performances.
Rodgers completed 23 out of 39 passes for 187 yards and an interception, absorbing four sacks from the New England defense. He regressed from the opening win over the Atlanta Falcons, a sign that Pittsburgh’s attack will have issues early on.

Tomlin, who was the longtime Steelers coach until he retired after the 2025 season, reflected on the team’s performance. He pointed out a lack of identity as they navigate a new period with Mike McCarthy as the head coach while Rodgers plays his final NFL season.
“From my perspective, they don’t have a place to hang their hat. They haven’t established the run. They’re not performing well enough on third down, or possession-down circumstances. And to make matters worse, they’re not getting yards in chunks. They can’t solve all their problems, but they better solve at least one of these problems, and really soon,” Tomlin said, via Blitzburgh.

Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers have the talent to be in the mix for the playoff picture. However, their road loss to the Patriots show they have limits to their reach as a playoff contender.
Pittsburgh failed to record a touchdown throughout the game, only managing a field goal in the second quarter. Meanwhile, New England scored in all four quarters, an aspect that the Steelers need to improve moving forward.
The Steelers will look to bounce back in their next matchup, being at home. They gear up for a rivalry clash with the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 3 as kickoff commences on Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. ET.
