Pixel-art RPGs have taken players to plenty of strange places, but a kingdom threatened by soggy fries and frozen beef? That’s new, but not imaginary anymore, thanks to this one upcoming Steam game.
WendyQuest: Legend of the Four Corner Stones is a free-to-play culinary adventure by Wendy’s, putting the popular fast food chain’s familiar red-haired mascot in the middle of a fantasy quest filled with food-themed monsters, turn-based combat, and colorful pixel-art environments. Developed and published by 81monkeys, this single-player gem has its store page live on Steam right now, but is yet to receive a release date.
WendyQuest Brings A Fast-Food Twist To Classic RPGs
WendyQuest: Legend of the Four Corner Stones takes place in Savoria, a culinary kingdom facing a rather unusual crisis. Dr. Mechborg and his organization, Mech Corp, have unleashed a curse called Mechtosis, spreading culinary disasters across the land. Wendy, the protagonist, must collect four magical stones and put an end to the chaos.
The premise is deliberately silly, but the game appears to take its RPG foundations seriously. Players will explore five food-themed regions, including salty forests, seasoned deserts, and frosty mountain peaks, with hidden secrets scattered throughout the world.
Wendy also has an unusual arsenal at her disposal. Sacred spatulas and fresh beef are among the items tied to her quest, while her enemies include Golden Archers and Hot Sludge Sundaes. Other food-inspired foes, including mechanical fries and chicken, are also part of the experience.
The pixel-art presentation gives WendyQuest the look of a traditional 2D fantasy adventure. The features we know about so far suggest an experience aimed at players who enjoy old-school RPGs with a sense of humor. Combat follows a turn-based system, with players able to time their attacks to deal additional damage.
Wendy isn’t expected to face Mech Corp alone, either. It’s a single-player game, but you’ll still have companions to help you out. Her potential sidekicks include a French Fry Archer, a Spicy Chickeneer, and a Frosty Mage. Of course, each of these characters has strengths against particular enemy types, adding a tactical element to battles beyond simply selecting the strongest attack.
The combination of party-based battles, magical artifacts, and a world-saving quest should feel familiar to fans of classic JRPGs. However, WendyQuest puts its own fast-food spin on those conventions instead of presenting itself as another conventional fantasy RPG.
Is WendyQuest Free On Steam?
WendyQuest: Legend of the Four Corner Stones isn’t playable yet, but when it does launch, it’ll be a free-to-play game, as confirmed by the developers. Interestingly, the Steam description also promises that players can “earn real food as you play.”
However, 81monkeys or Wendy’s has yet to explain how players can unlock these rewards or where the promotion will be available. For now, interested players can visit the WendyQuest Steam page and add the game to their wishlists to follow its release.
WendyQuest is an unexpected move from a fast-food brand, but its appeal may extend beyond the novelty of playing as Wendy’s mascot. With pixel-art exploration, strategic battles, and a decidedly ridiculous food-themed world, it could be worth watching for RPG fans on Steam looking for something different and, of course, free.
