State track: Wayne's Garrett wins 100, 200 championships

Jun. 7—Wayne High School senior Key’Shawn Garrett has a pre-race tradition he observes just before leaving the starting line.

“I always pray to the man above for his support throughout the race,” Garrett said.

Garrett’s prayer was answered on Sunday, June 7, as he won the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes at the Division I state track and field championships at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

In the 100, Garrett finished in 10.49 seconds to beat the second-place finisher, Pickerington Central’s Lorenzo Brazzell, who clocked a time of 10.67.

“It was my first time coming to state in the 100,” Garrett said, “and working hard for this moment, it feels great.”

In the 200, Garrett finished in 21.10 seconds. Brazzell placed second in 21.16. A year earlier, Garrett placed third in the 200 in 20.91.

“It feels great after placing third last year and then this year finishing on top,” Garrett said. “There was a lot of hard work from last year to this year.”

Last year, Garrett was part of the winning 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams that included Keng Martin, Samarion Sroufe and Jamier Brown. Those sprinters helped lead Wayne to the state championship.

Sroufe finished sixth in the 100 on Sunday in 10.81 seconds. He and Garrett then teamed with Martin and Derrick Stinnett for a third-place finish in the 4×200 relay with a time of 1:25.93.

Beavercreek’s team of Roman Wilborne, Darius Parker, Aaden Hildebrand and Kelvin Keyes finished second in the 4×200 in 1:25.61.
