Star Wars: Fate Of The Galaxy Officially Announced

After spending almost twenty years in development, one Star Wars-inspired fan game is about to see the light of day, and it may just mark the most ambitious one yet.

Since bursting onto our screens way back in 1977 with the release of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, the Star Wars universe has been the cornerstone of the sci-fi genre and now, almost half a century later, it is still going strong with regular new releases spanning across film, television, and gaming.

Whilst there may be plenty of official Star Wars-related video games available, such as the more recent Star Wars: Outlaws, it has not just been official studios and publishers that have been hard at work. As, after two decades, one group of volunteering fans are set to finally release Star Wars: Fate of the Galaxy, a space combat game built entirely on FreeSpace 2’s open-source engine. As such, the total conversion mod will be free to play on Linux, Mac, and PC.

Offering several distinct modes, Fate of the Galaxy features “interconnected story campaigns, customizable dynamic campaigns that span across the galaxy, arcade and training scenarios, single stand-alone missions, and even quick multiplayer matches on LAN.”

“Our goal is to deliver starfighter combat that captures the look and feel of the movies,” the game’s official website reads. “Play your way with engaging combat and campaigns, custom settings, mission creation tools, and more.”

There will be different systems to travel to throughout the game, and players will have the opportunity to take on unique roles, such as going it alone as an independent adventurer or joining either the Rebel Alliance or the Galactic Empire as a pilot. As a pilot, you will be able to test out a whopping 64 different ships, each with their own fully functioning cockpits, and even customizable weapon loadouts.

Whilst Star Wars: Fate of the Galaxy does include its own storyline and missions, players will be pleased to learn that a mission editor is also available, allowing them to continue their journey long after the credits have rolled.

This does not only pertain to the mission editor, as Fate of the Galaxy has plenty of adjustable settings too. Players will be able to enjoy a “wide range of play styles and experiences, from more casual to more sim-like,” as well as changing difficulty settings and input methods. Not only that, but VR users will also be able to play this brand-new Star Wars-inspired title on their headsets.

Perhaps most exciting is the news that its developers reassure us that the game was made without the use of generative AI. As the website states, “all assets [were] made by humans only,” and after two decades in development, it is safe to say that this one is a labor of love.

If you are still not convinced, make sure to check out the official trailer for Star Wars: Fate of the Galaxy and experience a stunning gaming experience set during the events of the original Star Wars trilogy.

Star Wars is a multimedia franchise that started in 1977 by creator George Lucas. After the release of Star Wars: Episode IV- A New Hope (originally just titled Star Wars), the franchise quickly exploded, spawning multiple sequels, prequels, TV shows, video games, comics, and much more.
