Walter Marvin Koenig was born in Chicago on September 14, 1936, and moved to Manhattan as a child; his parents were Russian Jewish immigrants, and changed the family name to Koenig from Königsberg. While studying at UCLA, a professor recommended that he try acting, and subsequently made TV appearances on series like Ben Casey, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and The Lieutenant. The latter was Gene Roddenberry‘s first TV production, and he’d later bring Koenig aboard his most famous creation: Star Trek.

Brought in to shore up Star Trek‘s appeal with younger viewers, thanks to his resemblance to Davy Jones of The Monkees, Koenig played Lieutenant Pavel Chekov, a Russian Starfleet officer whose accent Koenig based on his father’s. Although he gained a great deal of fame from the series, he found it unsatisfying, and briefly left the show during its third and final season to act in a play. When the show was revived as an animated series, Chekov did not return, but Koenig did come back to pen an episode of the series, “The Infinite Vulcan.” Koenig was persuaded to return, along with the rest of the Original Series cast, for the big-screen Star Trek movies; he starred in all six of the films with the original cast, and cameoed in Star Trek: Generations, the film that handed the series over to the Next Generation cast.

Koenig died of natural causes; he is survived by his daughter Danielle Koenig, and was predeceased by his son, actor Andrew Koenig, and wife, Judy Koenig. Collider extends our sympathies to Walter Koenig’s friends, family, colleagues, and fans.
