St. Thomas Aquinas new No. 1 in USA TODAY national football poll

Florida high school football teams sit atop the latest USA TODAY Super 25 rankings.

Following some big wins on Aug. 29, led by Columbus’ 33-28 upset of previous No. 2 Bishop Gorman (Nevada), three Florida teams are now ranked in the top six in the nation.

St. Thomas Aquinas moved up a spot to No. 1 in the national poll. The Raiders jumped out to a 38-0 halftime lead against DeSoto, a 2025 Texas state champion, and cruised to a 38-14 win. Senior wide receiver Julius Jones (Notre Dame commit) broke the program’s career receiving yards mark in the win.

Including the Kickoff Classic win over defending Class 2A state champion Cardinal Mooney, Aquinas has had a running clock in every game it has played this season.

IMG Academy checks in as the No. 2 team in the nation. The Ascenders pounded Cornerstone Christian (Texas) 59-10 in Week 2. IMG junior quarterback Jayden Wade (Georgia commit) threw for three touchdowns and also had an impressive 78-yard touchdown run.

Columbus was the biggest riser, going from unranked to No. 6 in the country. The Explorers stunned Bishop Gorman behind the elite play of senior athlete A’mir Sears (Miami commit), who had three interceptions and two touchdowns.

West Boca, which routed American Heritage on the road in Week 1, is the only other Florida team on the list. The Bulls are ranked No. 23.
