St Teresa’s college old boys launch N1bn infrastructure project

NSUKKA, NIGERIA – The St Teresa’s College Nsukka Old Boys’ Association (STOBA) Worldwide has launched a N1 billion infrastructure upgrade project aimed at restoring academic excellence and improving facilities at its alma mater in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The President of STOBA Worldwide, HRH Igwe Professor Johnny Eluka, announced the initiative during the association’s 2026 National Convention, held at St Teresa’s College, Nsukka, from October 23 to 25.

Eluka described the fundraising initiative as a collective responsibility of all old boys, graduating sets and branches of the association, stressing that rebuilding the institution would require sustained contributions and cooperation among alumni.

He said the project would address critical infrastructure needs, including classrooms, laboratories, hostels, water supply, electricity and other learning facilities, to provide students with an environment conducive to academic excellence.

“One billion naira is a bold target, yet it remains achievable when we recognise that support for our alma mater is a collective obligation. No single person, no single set, and no single branch can bear this burden alone,” he said.

The initiative is expected to mobilise alumni across different generations and locations to support the rehabilitation of the school and improve the conditions under which current and future students receive their education.

Alumni Urged to Support Restoration Efforts

Eluka called on members of the association to move beyond periodic reunions and translate their connection to the institution into practical interventions that would help restore its facilities and academic standing.

He said the project reflected the theme of the convention, “Restoring Excellence; Rebuilding the Base of Our Alma Mater,” adding that STOBA was committed to ensuring that students enjoyed the quality of education and facilities that contributed to the development of previous generations.

According to him, the association’s responsibility extends beyond maintaining relationships among former students to supporting the institution that shaped their personal and professional lives.

Reviewing his administration’s achievements since its election in October 2022, Eluka said STOBA had established the STOBA GLOBAL platform to mobilise support, revitalise branches and improve the learning experience of more than 1,600 students at the college.

He disclosed that an assessment conducted by the association’s National Executive Committee revealed widespread infrastructural deterioration at the institution.

The findings prompted the association to engage relevant stakeholders and explore ways of supporting the school’s restoration.

The N1 billion initiative is intended to provide a framework for addressing the identified challenges through collective alumni contributions and coordinated interventions.

Eluka also commended the convention’s Local Organising Committee, led by Ozo Chijioke Attah, for its hard work and commitment to the successful hosting of the event.

Convention Lecture Proposes Five-Point Agenda

Delivering the convention lecture on the theme of restoring excellence and rebuilding the foundation of the alma mater, alumnus Okey Akobundu said the responsibility for returning the institution to its former standing rested substantially on its old boys.

He proposed a five-point agenda to guide the restoration efforts, urging alumni to return to the school, re-equip its facilities, motivate teachers, reorient students and reconnect the association with its alma mater for periodic interventions.

The proposals emphasised the need for alumni to combine infrastructure development with support for teachers, improved student attitudes and sustained engagement with the school.

Akobundu urged members to contribute meaningfully to the N1 billion target, regardless of the size of their individual donations.

He said sustained collective action was essential to rebuilding the institution, noting that contributions from different members could help advance the restoration agenda.

His recommendations also highlighted the importance of maintaining a lasting relationship between the association and the school rather than limiting alumni involvement to annual conventions and reunions.

The proposed approach places emphasis on continued engagement, with old boys expected to support the institution through practical assistance and interventions aimed at improving teaching and learning conditions.

Chairman of Occasion Charges Students on Discipline

During an on-the-spot assessment of the college’s facilities conducted by the school principal, Rev. Fr. Paul Alli, the Chairman of the Occasion, Hon. Chinedu Onu, urged students to work hard and aspire to become influential members of society.

Onu encouraged the students to remain disciplined, respect their teachers and parents, and comply with the institution’s regulations.

He added that the college’s alumni would continue to intervene in efforts to restore the institution’s glory.

The assessment provided an opportunity for participants to observe the school’s facilities in the context of the restoration agenda being advanced by the association.

The emphasis on discipline and academic commitment also reflected the convention’s broader objective of restoring excellence, with the proposed interventions covering both the physical learning environment and the development of students.

Convention Marks Alumni Anniversaries, Elects New Executives

The 2026 national convention featured the celebration of the 50th and 25th anniversaries of the 1976 and 2001 graduating classes, respectively.

Other activities included a fundraising launch, a novelty football match and a banquet, bringing together members of the association to celebrate their shared history and discuss the future of their alma mater.

The association also conducted an election that produced a new national executive team.

Professor Eluka Jonny Chibueze emerged as National President, while Barr. Tony Ugwu was elected First National Vice President. Engr. Tony Offor became Second National Vice President, and Dr. Okocha Augustine emerged as Third National Vice President responsible for the diaspora.

Dr. Ossai Nelson Ike was elected National Secretary, while Anigbo Anointed Chukwudi became National Assistant Secretary.

Other elected officers include Nwosu Peter Chuks as National Treasurer; Aneke Ugochukwu as National Financial Secretary; Onyechi Ugochukwu as National Social Secretary; and Ezeugwu Evaristus Okeke as National Assistant Social Secretary.

Ezema Ikechukwu Humphrey was elected National Publicity Secretary, while Onyishi Nnandi Charles became National Assistant Publicity Secretary.

The new executive team is expected to work with members across the association’s branches and graduating sets to advance its objectives, including the proposed infrastructure upgrade.

With the N1 billion target announced at the convention, STOBA Worldwide has placed alumni mobilisation at the centre of its plans to improve facilities at St Teresa’s College, Nsukka.

The success of the initiative will depend on sustained participation by members and the association’s ability to coordinate contributions towards the school’s identified needs.
