Moments after his team pulled off the most significant win in program history, UCF Knights head coach Scott Frost spoke for everyone.
“That’s the weirdest end of a game I’ve ever seen,” Frost said to Fox sideline reporter Alexa Landestoy, while surrounded by a sea of black and gold.
UCF (4-3) upset the No. 2 BYU Cougars (6-1), 39-31 in double overtime, to secure the first win against a top-five-ranked opponent in school history. The result itself was wild enough, but the path to victory was a brand of mayhem unique to college football.
Coach Scott Frost could not be happier with his team and the way things finished as they pulled off the crazy upset against BYU

With just under two minutes left in regulation and the game tied at 24, the BYU defense stuffed UCF quarterback Keyone Jenkins on fourth-and-goal.

The BYU offense rewarded the defense by going three-and-out, and that’s when the madness truly began.
Overtime looked inevitable until BYU defensive tackle Keanu Tanuvasa committed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, setting UCF up in field goal range. Instead of kicking right away, with 14 seconds left, Frost sent his offense back out there. Jenkins inexplicably spiked the ball before throwing an incompletion, and then Will Stone missed a 46-yard field goal attempt.
Still, the game didn’t head directly into overtime.
Stone’s kick was blocked, and he recovered the ball with two seconds on the clock, seemingly allowing UCF a redo at the game winner. But because BYU ripped Stone’s helmet off during the recovery, we got a 10-second runoff, which Terry McAulay disagreed with, and then the game entered overtime.
A circus show finish to regulation sends the BYU-UCF game to OT.

In overtime, BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier threw a 28-yard touchdown, and Jenkins responded with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Josh Derry to even the score at 31—and prompt Robert Griffin III to call BYU’s defense “lactose intolerant” from his Fox booth with Connor Onion.
In double overtime, BYU seemingly forced UCF to settle for a field goal. But BYU’s Kendal Wall earned a roughing-the-kicker penalty, and Jenkins made them pay with a touchdown pass and successful two-point conversion. BYU failed to answer on the ensuing possession, granting UCF a chaotic, well-earned upset.
UCF got the TD and two-point conversion after the roughing-the-kicker ruling to take a 39-31 lead over BYU in 2OT.

You haven’t experienced confusion until you have watched the end of this BYU game with no sound. What just happened?

The last sequence of BYU-UCF might be the weirdest ending to a game I’ve ever seen. Like four obscure rules came into play there. Anyway, overtime.

Every aspect of the BYU UCF is a 5 star Gong Show. Nobody knows or can explain what is happening.

At the end of regulation in BYU/UCF, there should not have been a 10-second runoff. The clock stopping for the helmet off was not the only reason it stopped. It also stopped because it was the end of a legal kick down.

There has never been a more overmatched group of officials than those trying to officiate BYU-UCF right now.

That roughing the kicker call was AWFUL.
And now UCF has a TD.
Can’t accuse the Big 12 of protecting BYU on that one.

UCF-BYU. Game of the Year. We all need a 40 minute emergency podcast explaining the ruling at the end of regulation immediately afterwards.

A peek behind the curtain: We have several writers at home who monitor games and write as necessary. I accidentally agreed to help on UCF-BYU.
