The Indiana Fever were missing another key veteran at practice Tuesday. While much of the attention remains on Caitlin Clark’s recovery from a back injury, guard Sophie Cunningham was unable to participate after being sidelined by an illness.

The good news for Indiana is that the timing could allow Cunningham plenty of opportunity to recover before the Fever return to action Sunday against the Las Vegas Aces.

Cunningham absent from Tuesday’s practice

According to reports from Fever practice, Cunningham missed Tuesday’s workout because of an illness. She is currently listed as day-to-day, but Indiana’s schedule gives the veteran guard several more days before the team’s next game.

With nearly a week between contests, the Fever can afford to be cautious as Cunningham works through the illness.

Veteran has become key piece for Indiana

Cunningham has carved out an important role during her first season with the Fever. The veteran is averaging 9.6 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists while shooting an efficient 49.1 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from 3-point range.

Her ability to stretch the floor and provide toughness has made her one of Indiana’s most reliable role players. She also contributed nine points in Saturday’s 111-87 victory over the Sparks, knocking down both of her 3-point attempts.

Fever looking to get healthy before challenging road trip

Indiana is hoping to enter the second half of its season at full strength. The Fever have already been managing Clark’s back injury, and Cunningham’s illness adds another item to monitor during practice this week.

Fortunately for Indiana, there is no immediate rush. The Fever don’t return to the court until Sunday against the Aces before embarking on a difficult Western Conference road swing that also includes games against the Los Angeles Sparks and Phoenix Mercury.

Getting both Clark and Cunningham back to full health would provide a major boost as Indiana looks to build on its 11-8 start and continue climbing the WNBA standings.
