Even though the Chicago Bulls had to wait until the fourth pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, it looks like they made the right decision to select Caleb Wilson. While Summer League may not be a strong indicator of NBA success, the Bulls’ rookie is off to a great start.
Even though Summer League success doesn’t always translate to NBA stardom, seeing a 19-year-old thrive is much better than the alternative. Yet, Wilson’s performances are creating a lot of buzz around the league.
On July 10, Wilson set the unofficial record for most points in a player’s Summer League debut, dropping 35 while sinking 7-of-11 3-pointers. He did so while taking on the Memphis Grizzlies, who selected Cameron Boozer one spot ahead with the No. 3 overall pick in the first round.
While both flashed their potential, Wilson’s 35 points stole the show even if the Bulls lost by a point. Shortly after the game wrapped up, folks around the NBA couldn’t stop talking about it.
That includes former NBA point guard Darren Collison, who went on NBA TV to break down what makes Wilson so special, even as a rookie.
“Chicago Bulls have the one in Wilson… Most young players after they make a mistake or a turnover, they put their head down and kinda just don’t get back on defense. Caleb Wilson, watch that effort he shows to get back on defense. That’s how you cover for the mistake,” Collison said.
“Caleb’s ability to shoot that three at a high clip is going to be truly something special to watch. That’s why I’m excited to watch Caleb play this year,” Collison continued.
“I think he’s gonna be fun. “I think he’s going to be the best player in this draft. He has a lot of skill set. I’m not just talking about the shooting. I’m talking about defense, his tenacity. I think Wilson is going to be extremely special.”
Wilson made just seven 3-point shots this season in college, so for him to match that total in his first game, even if it’s during the Summer League, is an impressive feat. After the game, he remained focused on the result rather than the individual numbers.
“We lost. I mean, that’s my goal, to come here and win. Of course, it’s cool. Somebody’s going to break it (scoring record) one day. They always do. I’m happy that I got the record, ready to move on to what’s next.”
If he can maintain that confidence throughout his debut season, Wilson just might run away with the NBA’s Rookie of the Year award.
After finishing 12th in the Eastern Conference with a 31-51 record, the Bulls will need to count on Wilson to have a chance to compete this season. Judging by his Summer League performance, Wilson will be ready to roll.
