Some NBA teams felt 'disaster' Kawhi Leonard situation was Clippers' ultimate punishment

The NBA’s lengthy investigation into the Los Angeles Clippers and potential salary-cap circumvention involving Kawhi Leonard wrapped up on Wednesday, delivering a result that sent shockwaves across the league. The punishment handed down by the NBA included a lengthy list of suspensions, lost draft capital, fines and more, specifically impacting the Clippers organization.

For Leonard, the NBA is requiring him to pay $700,000 in restitution for “improper benefits by the Clippers for his uncle and former business rep, Dennis Robertson,” as ESPN’s Shams Charania reported.

Among the other significant punishments are the loss of five first-round draft picks, a $30 million fine for Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, and suspensions for Ballmer, Lawrence Frank, and Gillian Zucker. Following the news, longtime ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst spoke about the NBA’s decision during a conversation with Scott Van Pelt and offered an intriguing insight into how the situation was viewed around the league.

Unquestionably, the most notable statement from Windhorst was that some around the league felt the Kawhi Leonard arrangement was an “absolute disaster,” essentially a penalty “doled out over time.”

“There were some people who really felt like the league should come down with a crushing blow, which is what they did,” Windhorst said. “And there are other people who felt like a lot of the Clippers’ penalty with Kawhi Leonard had been doled out over time.”

“Because this Kawhi Leonard arrangement was an absolute disaster for them. I will say that that there’s a lot of people that made a lot of assumptions about Adam Silver along the way. This is as big of a punishment [that] has ever been doled out in the history of the NBA. He has been presumed to be soft on crime to a certain extent at times over the years. That’s not something you can say today.”

Brian Windhorst speaks on how other teams reacted to the Kawhi Clippers investigation:
