Sokoto lawmaker criticises Tinubu govt over development, insecurity

The Minority Leader of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Abubakar Magaji, has criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu, saying he has not seen significant development under the Federal Government in the past three years.

Magaji, who represents Bodinga North Constituency on the platform of the African Democratic Congress, made the statement on Tuesday in Sokoto while speaking with journalists on the performance of the Federal Government, particularly in the North.

“As far as I am concerned, as a serving legislator, if we are talking about progress in terms of leadership in our country, I can say without any fear of contradiction that I have not seen any progress under the Tinubu administration,” he said.

He urged the Federal Government to do more to address infrastructure deficits and other development challenges, saying the proposed Trans-Sahara road linking Illela in Sokoto State to Badagry in Lagos was not enough given the resources available to the government.

The lawmaker also raised concerns over insecurity in Sokoto State, claiming that 21 of the state’s 23 local government areas were vulnerable to security threats.

He said only Sokoto North and Sokoto South local government areas were relatively free from the challenges.

“What is happening now in Sokoto State is terrible. Out of the 23 Local Government Areas, only two are not vulnerable to security threats,” he said.

Magaji said the insecurity had forced residents of affected communities to abandon their homes and relocate to safer areas.

He disclosed that he was currently accommodating more than 20 displaced persons at his four-bedroom residence.

He contrasted the situation with the security conditions during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, saying only seven of Sokoto’s 23 local government areas were then vulnerable to security challenges.
