SJHN Daily: Thornton on Opening Home to Stenberg, GQ Interviews Celebrini, PWHL San Jose Expansion Jersey Revealed

Joe Thornton, the latest San Jose Sharks player inducted into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame, felt it was a no-brainer to open his home to top draft picks like Macklin Celebrini and Ivar Stenberg.

“Whatever you can do to kind of help out,” Thornton told the Mercury News. “I know it’s hard. I went through it as an 18-year-old and stayed with people for a few years. It was beneficial for me not worrying about cooking and cleaning so much.”

Thornton notably struggled in his first season after the Boston Bruins selected him first-overall. He had seven points in 55 games as a rookie. But Thornton then carved out a Hall of Fame career with 1,539 career points and a Hart Trophy. So he knows what he’s talking about.

He wants to help the San Jose Sharks youngsters reach similar heights.

“Just a great boy,” Thornton said of his newest addition, Stenberg. “He doesn’t think he speaks English very well, but he does. But he’s just getting comfortable with the Bay Area, and he’s a (19-year-old) boy. He should be going to college. It’s crazy that he’s playing in the NHL. So he’s doing great; he really is.”
