Barcelona have retained sole possession of the top spot in La Liga after making it five wins from five with a 4-2 victory over Levante.
Notably, their early-season numbers point to something even more striking than their perfect record.
Hansi Flick’s side have scored 21 goals across their opening five league matches, averaging more than four goals per game.
Add the 5-1 Champions League victory over Feyenoord and Barcelona have found the net 26 times in just six matches.
That attacking output becomes even more impressive when considering the circumstances, as Barça have operated without a traditional number 9 this season, and yet, the goals have not dried up.
Instead, responsibility has been spread across a collection of forwards and attacking midfielders, making the team considerably harder to contain.
Raphinha, Lamine Yamal, Fermin Lopez, Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi have all contributed to that blistering start.
Collectively, the five players have produced 26 goal contributions across those six matches.
Barcelona’s goals are coming from everywhere
Raphinha has led the way with eight goals and three assists, while Yamal has already registered seven goals and two assists.
Fermin has added four goals and two assists, Gordon has supplied four assists, and Adeyemi has contributed three goals and one assist.
Those numbers clearly show that there is no single route to goal.
Indeed, Yamal can create from wide areas or attack the box himself, while Raphinha provides another major source of goals and assists.
On the other hand, Fermin offers a more direct threat from midfield, and Gordon and Adeyemi add further attacking options, giving Flick the freedom to rotate without necessarily sacrificing his side’s cutting edge.
The absence of a pure centre-forward has therefore not translated into a lack of penetration. Quite the opposite.
Barcelona’s forwards have shared the burden, and their collective production has been one of the defining features of the opening weeks, and the 21 goals in La Liga are the clearest evidence.
Real Madrid cannot match Barcelona’s early numbers
The best way to judge just how impressive Barcelona’s start has been is to put it alongside the numbers of their biggest rivals.
Real Madrid, now under new manager Jose Mourinho, have also begun strongly, having won five of their six games.
Their league scoring record, though, is considerably less imposing.
Real Madrid have scored 14 goals in five La Liga matches, an average of fewer than three per game. That remains a respectable return and should not be dismissed, but it is a significant distance behind Barcelona’s 21.
The contrast becomes clearer when looking at the individual attacking contributions.
Kylian Mbappe has seven goals and one assist, Vinicius has one goal and four assists, Jude Bellingham has three goals and two assists, while Arda Guler has one goal and three assists.
There is quality throughout Madrid’s attack, but the production is not as evenly distributed as it is at Barcelona.
Barcelona’s collective attack is the real difference
The most notable distinction is not just the number of goals. It is how those goals are being generated.
Real Madrid’s early attacking numbers are heavily influenced by Mbappe, who has carried much of the scoring responsibility. Barcelona, by contrast, have received major contributions from several players at once.
That matters over the course of a long season because if one Barcelona attacker has a quiet night, another can step forward.
It is also why the lack of a traditional number 9 has not become the problem some might have expected.
Barcelona have compensated through movement, creativity and the sheer number of players capable of making decisive contributions.
Sure, there is still a long way to go, and early-season statistics can change, but for now, Barcelona have established a more convincing attacking benchmark.
