The Shawn Marion issues stern warning toPhiladelphia 76ers enter the 2026-27 NBA season with championship aspirations following a blockbuster offseason that brought LeBron James and Jaylen Brown to Philadelphia. However, former NBA champion Shawn Marion has raised concerns about the team’s ability to maximize its star-studded roster alongside Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe.

Speaking to Kyle Odegard of Action Network, Marion questioned whether Philadelphia’s collection of established stars could successfully coexist offensively, particularly with several players accustomed to commanding significant roles.

“There are a lot of guys over there and ain’t but one ball. They don’t really call plays anymore so that’s the uniqueness of the game now, but a lot of guys don’t play well without the ball. Every star doesn’t play well together. We see it time and time again. We’re going to see how it rolls out. I’m optimistic, but I want to see what happens,” Marion said.

The 76ers underwent a significant roster overhaul this summer, signing James after the 41-year-old superstar decided to leave the Los Angeles Lakers. Philadelphia also acquired Brown from the Boston Celtics in exchange for Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-round picks.

However, James and Brown join an already talented roster featuring All-Star guard Maxey and rising second-year guard Edgecombe, who enjoyed an impressive rookie campaign during the 2025-26 season.

Maxey averaged a career-high 28.3 points, 6.6 assists and 4.1 rebounds across 70 games last season, earning his second All-Star selection. Meanwhile, Edgecombe, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, averaged 16.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists while starting all 75 games he played during his rookie campaign.

With James, Embiid, Brown, Maxey and Edgecombe all capable of making significant offensive contributions, Philadelphia faces the challenge of establishing defined roles and maintaining an effective offensive rhythm.

The concerns come as the 76ers prepare to open their regular season following a disappointing preseason showing. Philadelphia finished its four-game exhibition slate with a 1-3 record, including a 125-120 overtime loss to the Celtics on Friday.

Beyond Philadelphia’s offensive chemistry, Marion identified another potential obstacle facing the organization: the health and availability of its two biggest stars.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what happens in Philly. Are they going to be healthy? What are they going to do?” Marion said.

The questions surrounding Embiid’s durability remain particularly significant entering the upcoming campaign.

The former NBA MVP appeared in just 38 regular-season games during the 2025-26 season, averaging 26.9 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists while shooting 48.9% from the field.

Although Embiid continued producing at an elite offensive level when available, his limited appearances represented another injury-plagued campaign.

The seven-time All-Star played just 19 games during the 2024-25 season after appearing in 39 contests in 2023-24. Consequently, Embiid has participated in only 96 of a possible 246 regular-season games over the past three seasons, raising concerns about his ability to remain healthy throughout an extended championship pursuit.

Marion praises James’ longevity entering historic 24th NBA season

Meanwhile, James enters an unprecedented 24th NBA season after appearing in 60 games with the Lakers during the 2025-26 campaign. He averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists while shooting 51.5% from the field.

James played 70 games during the 2024-25 season and 71 in 2023-24, demonstrating greater availability than Embiid despite approaching his mid-40s.
Nevertheless, Marion praised James’ remarkable longevity and ability to remain productive at an age when most players have already retired.

“It’s unbelievable. His longevity is something to be honored,” Marion said.

James’ arrival also creates an intriguing offensive dynamic involving Embiid, Brown, Maxey and Edgecombe. With five players capable of contributing significantly on offense, Philadelphia must determine how to distribute scoring opportunities while maintaining the defensive consistency necessary to compete against the Eastern Conference’s strongest teams.

The 76ers will begin their pursuit of a championship Tuesday, Oct. 20, against the reigning NBA champion New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on NBC.

For Philadelphia, the upcoming season will provide an opportunity to determine whether its offseason additions can overcome the chemistry and injury concerns Marion identified before the start of the campaign.
