Shane Beamer takes shot at media after South Carolina loss
Shane Beamer’s up-and-down tenure as the head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks seems likely to continue early on in the 2026 season.
The Gamecocks swallowed a tough loss to conference rivals Mississippi State yesterday, despite taking a nine-point lead into the halftime locker room. However, allowing 17 unanswered points in the third quarter flipped the game on its head, and South Carolina didn’t have enough answers to overcome the Bulldogs’ run, ultimately falling 41-34.
With a key game at Alabama right around the corner, Beamer looked to keep the focus of Saturday’s press conference on the remainder of the season, saying this game won’t “define” the Gamecocks’ season, as much as the media might want to spin that narrative this week.

“Certainly, really, really disappointing with us and how we performed overall tonight,” Beamer began his press conference. “Just told the team, this moment won’t define this football team. I know you guys and the articles y’all write and narratives and all that, you’re going to try and define this team based on what just happened tonight, and that’s not the case. We’ll be defined, this team will, by how we respond from this night.”
In the annals of college football coaches criticizing the media, Beamer’s comments fall on the tamer end of the spectrum. Even if it’s true that some writers will try and “define” South Carolina’s season based off of one loss to Mississippi State, that’s their prerogative. Others will almost assuredly offer nuance and context to what this loss means for the Gamecocks.
It’s the media’s job to try and make sense of the result on the field. Yes, there are certainly incentives for some to make grand proclamations and offer hot takes, but there are also plenty of journalists in that room who are simply trying to make a fair assessment of where this loss puts South Carolina.
Beamer, unfortunately, paints the media with a broad brush here. Though, he’s far from the first coach to take his angst out on the press after a tough loss.
