Shams: Bucks sought Hugo Gonzalez, Baylor, and maybe more from Celtics trade package

It sounded as if the Boston Celtics were at the goal line on Monday night for a deal for Milwaukee Bucks star center Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, the rival Miami Heat cut the C’s short, intercepting the Greek Freak by sending a huge haul to Wisconsin that included Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks, one pick swap, and one second-rounder, per ESPN insider Shams Charania.

The Heat also received Bucks forward Bobby Portis in the massive deal, which should become official as of July 6. Meanwhile, the Celtics were left with nothing, but that’s reportedly because they weren’t as willing to go all-in as the Heat. Charania said live on ESPN that Boston’s trade package of 2024 NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown and a pair of unprotected first-round picks wasn’t enough for Milwaukee. The Bucks sought more, as Charania listed youngster Hugo Gonzalez and wing Baylor Scheierman as Celtics with a lot of upside who could’ve been thrown in the Antetokounmpo offer.

“The Bucks wanted more assets,” Charania reported. “They wanted a couple young players — Hugo Gonzalez, Baylor Scheierman, potentially others — they wanted more first-round picks, more swaps…The Celtics were not willing to part with enough young players and assets to get a deal done.”

Gonzalez, Scheierman, and more picks must have been too much for Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens to let go. Now he has to live with the consequences of holding on to future assets because one could imagine that Brown, the longest-tenured Celtic, isn’t thrilled about having his name in legitimate trade talks for the second time in four years.

Where the Celtics go next with Brown remains to be seen. Perhaps the path forward will become more obvious following the first round of the 2026 NBA Draft on Tuesday night. The C’s hold the No. 27 pick and could keep it or bundle it in a trade, whether it be a blockbuster move or a simple trade to change their draft order.
