Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Drops 1 Bold Challenge On Chris Paul

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is now well past the stage where his name needs an introduction. The Oklahoma City Thunder star has won back-to-back MVP awards and established himself as one of the NBA’s biggest stars.

Chris Paul is in a different part of his story now. After 21 seasons, the 12-time All-Star announced his retirement in February, closing the door on one of the longest careers of his generation.

Paul recently shared a series of photos from a celebration with Russell Westbrook, who also retired this summer after 18 NBA seasons. The post quickly drew reactions from familiar names, but one comment turned the moment into something much more competitive.

That was enough for SGA to jump into the comments with a challenge nobody saw coming.

“I’ll fry you in tennis,” SGA wrote.

Paul was not about to back down. The former point guard answered just as quickly.

The exchange works because there is plenty of history behind it. Paul and SGA spent the 2019-20 season together in Oklahoma City, where the veteran guard became an important mentor for the young player. Their relationship did not end when Paul left the Thunder, and Gilgeous-Alexander later said the two remained extremely close.

That history makes the tennis challenge more than a random comment. SGA already knows how competitive Paul can be, which makes his confidence even more entertaining.

The timing also adds another layer. Gilgeous-Alexander is coming off another historic season with Oklahoma City, winning his second straight MVP while leading the Thunder to the league’s best regular-season record. He also earned the NBA’s Clutch Player of the Year award.

Paul, meanwhile, has nothing left to prove on a basketball court. He finished his career ranked second all-time in both assists and steals.

Westbrook also joined the conversation around Paul’s post, writing, “What a time my brother!!” His retirement came only months after Paul’s, making the reunion another reminder of how quickly that era of NBA point guards has moved into the past.

But Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had a different idea for Paul’s next competition. Basketball may be over for both men, but apparently, that does not mean the trash talk has to stop.
