Seventeen's Joshua and Jeonghan are showing on tour just how fun going to work with your best friend can be

  • Seventeen’s Jeonghan and Joshua are on tour together.
  • This follows the release of their first unit album, “Dreamscape,” on October 19.
  • They’re showing off just how fun it can be to be onstage with a friend of over 12 years.

Over a decade ago, the two were training to debut in K-pop. One was a doe-eyed Korean American with an acoustic guitar, fresh off the plane from Los Angeles; the other a South Korean high schooler. Working and living together, they overcame cultural and language barriers to become what they are today: best friends, as they often say, for over a decade.

Seventeen, the band they were training to be in, debuted in 2015 as a 13-member group. Now, the two bandmates are promoting their first unit album together under the name JxJ, which launched last month.

The duo bring years of stage experience to the project — and, as they told Business Insider before the album’s launch, they have “a different kind of chemistry” when they’re together.

Their first tour, “Journey Into Dreaming,” is giving that partnership an entire evening’s spotlight.

Business Insider attended two of the tour’s Incheon stops, which drew about 25,000 attendees across three nights from October 30 to November 1.

Their new album gave the show several directions to go in

Since JxJ’s “Dreamscape” album dropped on October 19, fans of the two have been wondering what would make it into the concert set list. The album’s seven songs have five duo tracks — all of which they performed live in Incheon.

“Outside” opened the concert with its rhythmic bass line. “Like You” followed, taking the set into house.

Later in the show, “One Plus One” brought R&B and soul into the mix, while the lead single, “12 o’clock,” supplied dance-rock.

And to round out the show, “No Looking Back,” a rousing concert anthem, got the fans singing along.

Incheon marked the first time that all four B-side duo tracks were performed live.

Years of performing together gave them somewhere to start

Joshua and Jeonghan had to decide what they wanted a project built around the two of them to sound like.

In their interview with Business Insider, the pair said conversations they’d had about the album’s direction had helped them “understand each other’s tastes on a deeper level.”

Together, they decided what they wanted to experiment with and what part of their tastes they wanted to put on display.

Joshua brought out an electric guitar. Jeonghan took to the piano.

Those separate interests had a place in the concert, too.

Joshua played the electric guitar during his solo set, which included the English version of “Baby Come Home” and the sexy alt-rock track,”Not Personal.”

Jeonghan served up sweet and lyrical styles, playing the piano during his solo ballad, “Coincidence,” at the keyboard. “Coloring,” a new solo song from “Dreamscape,” was reminiscent of Japanese pop, and let the singer show off his cute but laid-back dance moves.

Game time

Then there were the games, in which the two competed to avoid penalties.

Between songs, they traded banter, cheating their way through most of the challenges.

Games included a retooled version of “Pictionary” and quizzes where they had to guess the correct placement of various plushies. The winners avoided viral TikTok dance challenges while wearing prop headbands — but they convinced each other to do the penalty together anyway.

Seventeen’s catalog supplied old favorites

JxJ had plenty of group songs to pick from. They went with “Crazy in Love” and “Come to Me,” Seventeen songs that haven’t been performed live in years.

For fans who miss the complete band, JxJ brought out some tracks from its most recent tour set list, like “Rock with You” and “20.”

Haley Yuen, a fan from the US, flew to South Korea to see JxJ for two nights.

“Their chemistry on stage was like watching two longtime besties on stage having fun,” Yuen told Business Insider. “This is my first time attending a unit concert. So it really allowed me to put all of my attention on the two and their dynamic.”

Making it big with your bestie

According to South Korean music tracker Hanteo, “Dreamscape” sold 804,949 copies worldwide during its first week, and topped its weekly album chart.

In Japan, the album debuted at No. 1 on Oricon’s weekly album chart dated November 2. Oricon estimated its sales at 65,558 copies. The album also topped Japan’s Oricon Weekly Album Chart and Weekly Combined Album Chart, as well as Billboard Japan’s Top Albums Sales.

Hitting the road together

JXJ will be on the road together for another quarter — they’re taking their show to Japan on November 21 and 22.

They’re also serving up plenty of content on social media.
