Former half marathon world record holder Kibiwott Kandie has been banned for seven years for two breaches of anti-doping rules.

The independent Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) of World Athletics said on Thursday that the Kenyan refused to provide a sample and also tampered with a doping control procedure.

Kandie had already been provisionally suspended in March 2025. The 30-year-old has now admitted both breaches. The sanction was therefore reduced from eight to seven years.

Kandie won the silver medal at the Half Marathon World Championships in Poland in 2020. Over the distance, he set a world record of 57 minutes 32 seconds in Valencia in the same year which has since been bettered.

Kandie also won the Valencia half marathon in 2022 and 2023. He finished 13th at the Berlin Marathon in 2024.
