Setback for Vikings star as NFL hands down punishment after roster move

Jermar Jefferson’s 2026 campaign has ended with the Minnesota Vikings running back receiving a fine from the NFL.

Jefferson has been fined $5,583 by the league for a face mask penalty during the Vikings’ 34-6 preseason loss to the Denver Broncos.

The punishment follows an incident involving Broncos returner Kolbe Katsis during the third quarter. With Minnesota punting on fourth-and-13, Jefferson grabbed Katsis’ facemask, resulting in a flag.

While the penalty itself did not have a major impact on the outcome of a game the Vikings eventually lost by 28 points, it has now resulted in financial punishment for Jefferson.

The NFL’s decision represents the final punishment Jefferson has received for the incident, with the running back avoiding any additional sanction beyond the fine.

The league’s rules state that players must immediately release an opponent’s facemask or helmet opening and cannot grasp, twist, turn, push or pull it.

A facemask foul can result in a 15-yard penalty, while a player can also be disqualified if the action is deemed flagrant.

Jefferson’s fine is also below the maximum amount the NFL can issue for such an offence. According to the league, a first offence can result in a fine of up to $11,941, while a second offence can carry a maximum of $17,911.

The Vikings running back therefore avoided the heavier financial punishment available to the league, although he will still have to pay $5,583 following the incident.

Players also have the option to appeal fines handed down by the NFL, leaving Jefferson with that avenue available following the league’s decision.
