The Edmonton Oilers‘ coaching search has taken a troubling turn as the NHL officially begins its investigation into Mike Babcock’s 2023 resignation from the Columbus Blue Jackets.
While Edmonton remains interested in Babcock as a candidate, growing resistance from player agents has raised fresh questions about whether the organization can afford the distraction that comes with a potential hire.
According to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman, the Oilers were prepared to move forward with Babcock if the league determined there was no obstacle to hiring him. Friedman reported that Babcock met with ownership, management, and a small group of players during the process. And they are all on the same boat.
However, the reaction beyond the organization has become a significant issue. Friedman wrote, “Several agents of Edmonton players who were not involved in direct conversations with Babcock also voiced concerns, adding they didn’t like the idea of clients being traded there, either.”

That sentiment cuts deeper than a typical coaching debate. Edmonton is built around franchise stars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, but roster building in today’s NHL depends on attracting and retaining talent. Concerns from agents could complicate future negotiations and impact the team’s reputation among NHL players.
Analyst Jason Gregor also highlighted the growing unease. He shared a text from an NHL player agent, who said, “The opportunity to play with McDavid or Draisaitl is diminished with the potential to be coached by Babcock. It is a valid concern voiced to me by a few of my clients.”

Edmonton’s interest is understandable. The organization wanted a coach with experience, structure and a proven track record after moving on from Kris Knoblauch, and Vegas not allowing them to interview Bruce Cassidy. Babcock’s history includes a Stanley Cup and years of success behind NHL benches, so they saw him as a fall back option.
Yet the investigation creates uncertainty for the Oilers. Reports indicate league investigators will examine concerns beyond the well-publicized phone-related allegations from Columbus. The NHLPA has also expressed objections during discussions surrounding a possible hire.
“We asked the NHL to do an investigation before they hire a coach… they’ve agreed,” NHLPA Executive Director Marty Walsh said. “… we’ll see what happens when it’s over.”

If the Oilers ultimately choose Babcock after investigation results, they may gain an experienced coach. But if player perception continues to trend negatively, Edmonton risks creating a challenge that would obstruct their retool plans. For a team chasing a Stanley Cup, that may be the biggest concern of all.
