Serena Williams to Play Doubles with Sister Venus at Cincinnati Open After Wimbledon Injury

Serena Williams will soon be back in action.

After a knee injury forced Serena, 44, to withdraw from playing Wimbledon doubles with older sister Venus Williams in July, the tennis superstars will now compete together at this month’s Cincinnati Open.

The tournament, which kicks off on Aug. 8 and concludes on Aug. 23, announced in a statement on Monday, Aug. 3. that the sisters will take the court after being awarded a doubles wild card entry.

Venus, 46, also received a singles wild card, the tournament said. Other singles competitors will include Sloane Stephens, Taylor Townsend, Darja Vidmanova, Elvina Kalieva, Caroline Dolehide and Lois Boisson.

Serena and Venus received a wild card for Wimbledon, but Serena was forced to withdraw after tweaking her knee. She announced her injury in an Instagram post on July 4, writing, “I’m heartbroken to have to withdraw from doubles.”

“Coming back to compete again has been a gift, and the opportunity to play alongside Venus once more meant the world to me. I did everything I could to be ready, but unfortunately my knee just isn’t ready to compete,” she continued.

Serena added, “I’m especially grateful to tournament director, Jamie Baker, and the entire tournament team for giving me every opportunity to play here,” she continued. “Thank you to the fans for your incredible support and for making this comeback so meaningful…All I can say is stay tuned to a city near you.”

The sisters’ last appearance in a doubles match together came at the 2022 U.S. Open.
