She’s back.
Almost four years after “evolving” away from tennis at the US Open, arguably the greatest female tennis player of all time, Serena Williams, is back in action. This time, it will be on the grass courts of Queen’s Club in doubles competition.
Her partner of choice is the highly promising Victoria Mboko, the Canadian whose rise all the way into the Top 10 of the rankings has been a major talking point since her breakout early last year. The 23-time singles Major champion will not be playing singles this week. However, she has yet to confirm whether that will remain the case when she competes in Berlin or eventually at the Wimbledon Championships next month. Her first assignment back on court will not be an easy one, as she and Mboko are scheduled to face the No. 3 seeds, Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe, in their opening match.
While the partnership between Routliffe and Melichar-Martinez is new, both opponents possess impressive doubles pedigrees. Routliffe has won multiple Major titles in doubles and is also a former World No. 1 in the discipline, while Melichar-Martinez has captured 19 WTA doubles titles, along with the 2018 Wimbledon mixed doubles championship.
Williams and Mboko will begin the match as underdogs, but with greatness on their side, anything can be expected as the tennis world eagerly awaits the return of one of the sport’s greatest icons.

The match is scheduled to begin not before 5:30 PM local time in London on Tuesday, June 9 (12:30 PM in New York).
