Real Madrid star Thibaut Courtois has taken firm aim at the United States national team, after playing his part in sending Mauricio Pochettino’s troops packing from the World Cup.
Courtois and Belgium were of course back in action in the early hours of Tuesday, locking horns with host nation USA in the Last-16 of the World Cup.
The discourse in the buildup to the clash was dominated by the situation of Folarin Balogun, after the American striker was allowed to play his part despite being shown a red card in his country’s prior outing.
In the end, though, the Monaco man’s presence had little impact on proceedings.
Rising to the occasion when it mattered most, a rampant Belgium ran out 4-1 winners, to book their spot in the World Cup’s quarter-finals.
The aforementioned Thibaut Courtois featured from the off in the matchup, and was only beaten as a result of a deflected first-half free-kick.
Speaking to the media post-match, the shot-stopper therefore made use of the opportunity to take aim at what he considers a ‘disrespectful’ American outfit:
“We have punished the disrespect that the Americans have shown us in the last few days. I was way more confident that we’d beat USA than I was of beating Senegal, simply because Senegal are a much better team than the USA.”
