By proposing a specialised institution for agricultural education, the bill seeks to strengthen the role of formal training in improving farming methods and supporting the development of the agricultural sector.
The proposed college would also be expected to contribute to building agricultural capacity in a region where farming is an important economic activity.
Akpabio Commends Initiative as Bill Awaits Further Approval
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, commended the Senate committee for its work and Ndume for sponsoring the bill, describing it as a development-oriented initiative.
Akpabio said the proposed institution would contribute to agricultural development in Nigeria and expressed support for efforts to strengthen the sector through education and institutional capacity-building.
The Senate’s passage of the bill marks a legislative step towards establishing the Federal College of Agriculture in Shani. However, the institution cannot be established through the Senate’s approval alone.
In line with the legislative process outlined for the bill, it will be transmitted to the House of Representatives for concurrence. If approved by the House, it will subsequently be forwarded to President Bola Tinubu for assent.
The proposed college is expected to focus on agricultural education and the dissemination of improved farming techniques, with the broader objective of strengthening productivity and supporting food production in Borno State and other parts of Nigeria.
Its eventual establishment will depend on the completion of the remaining legislative process and the necessary steps to implement the proposed institution.
