Second-year Colts safety surprisingly placed on retired list

INDIANAPOLIS — The Colts placed second-year safety Reuben Lowery on the reserve/retired list at the start of the team’s mandatory minicamp Tuesday, something of a surprising decision for a player heading into his second season.

Lowery, an undrafted free agent out of UT-Chattanooga, initially made Baltimore‘s roster out of training camp as a sleeper and played 70 snaps against Houston due to injuries, making five tackles.

The Ravens waived Lowery shortly after that game, and Indianapolis snapped up Lowery.

Lowery remained on the Colts‘ active roster for the rest of the season, a sign of the team’s investment in the young safety.

But Indianapolis has spent the offseason overhauling the safety position, signing veterans Juanyeh Thomas and Jonathan Owens in free agency, briefly taking a flyer on former Chargers safety Nasir Adderley, using a third-round pick to draft A.J. Haulcy and investing a significant amount of guaranteed money in undrafted free agent Austin Brown.
