Sean Payton gave a funny birthday cake to Sean McVay

Although Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton can be a passionate, serious individual, don’t be afraid to say the coach doesn’t have any fun.

As the Broncos prepared to face the Los Angeles Rams this week, Payton spoke about his relationship with coach Sean McVay.

McVay (Tampa Bay) and Payton (Philadelphia) both “grew up” under former NFL coach Jon Gruden before becoming head coaches across the NFL, and Payton has long admired McVay, who came under Mike Shanahan and other offense geniuses.

“Listen, we both in the early stages worked for Jon [Gruden],” Payton said earlier this week. “Shoot, I’ve always felt like he was someone you paid attention to early on in LA. We had some games against each other, and then it’s been a minute, but yes.”

Payton, who once engaged in a prank warwith Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees when he was with the New Orleans Saints, poked fun at McVay’s age on a recent trip to Cabo.

“(McVay) had a birthday down in Cabo,” Payton said. “We had a little get-together, and we had our quarterbacks. There were just six or seven people there and I don’t know what he was turning, but we gave him this Benjamin Button cake and we said he was the only coach in NFL history that came right out of high school, he’s actually getting younger each year. At some point, he’s going to have to get out of it because he’s too young. He’s got a good sense of humor, he’s bright”

All jokes aside, Payton has a ton of respect for McVay.

“[I] love watching his tape,” Payton said. “So it’s kind of like I said about Mike [Macdonald], we’re rooting for him in every game except one.”

The Broncos and Rams will do battle on Sunday Night Football in one of the biggest games of the early season in Week 3.
