Sean McVay shares disappointing update on Terrance Ferguson's latest injury

· · 2 min read

The Los Angeles Rams can’t catch a break when it comes to injuries. Just as Terrance Ferguson was set to return from a five-game absence due to an ankle injury, he pulled his hamstring in the Rams’ final practice of the week on Friday and was immediately ruled out.

Ferguson is still on injured reserve and hasn’t been activated yet, so he’s not taking up a roster spot. But the Rams now have just over two weeks to activate him; if they don’t, he’ll remain on injured reserve for the rest of the season.

Sean McVay provided an update on Ferguson’s status after Sunday’s win over the Commanders, telling reporters that the young tight end will probably be out “another couple weeks.”

“Pulled his hamstring. You can’t make it up, can you?” McVay said, visibly disappointed. “He was running just a standard out-cut, felt his hamstring pull and probably be another couple weeks for him.”

The Rams play the Cardinals next week, a game that Ferguson is almost certain to miss. After that, they have a bye in Week 11 before returning to face the Packers in Week 12 on Thanksgiving Eve. The Rams are going to take it a week at a time with Ferguson, as McVay wants to avoid any scenario where he isn’t activated before the 21-day window closes.

He feels terrible for Ferguson, who missed time as a rookie and is now in danger of missing at least seven straight games while on injured reserve.

“I think we’ll take it a little bit at a time,” McVay added. “When he got the scan on Friday, it showed he pulled his hamstring. We know how those soft-tissue injuries can occur. I think the first thing is you feel for him because he had worked his a– off to be able to put himself in a position. His ankle was feeling good, thought he had a really good work week. He was going to be a big part of the plan today. Other guys had to adjust and adapt, but the biggest thing I’ll say is we’ll take it a week at a time with him, but we’re hoping to avoid where you’re not activating him when that 21(-day) clock expires because you don’t want to lose him for the whole season.”

Ferguson is a promising player for the Rams, but he’s struggled to stay healthy. With Davante Adams also out, the Rams badly needed him to return soon to give Matthew Stafford another trusted target, but he’ll be on the shelf for a little while longer.
