Seahawks Join NFL History in Worst Way Possible Despite Sam Darnold’s 379-Yard Game

The Seattle Seahawks have had a big upset with a shocking loss to the Washington Commanders. Being last year’s Super Bowl champions, there were high expectations on the team to replicate their success. The team already won the first two games of the season.

The loss against the Commanders was unexpected, and a big loss for the visitors. The game was tightly contested, with the final score standing at 33-31. With the loss also came an undesirable record.

The Seahawks had a 12-game winning streak, which started from last season’s regular season and playoffs. It was also the Commanders’ first win this season, shocking many that the Super Bowl champions lost to a much weaker team.

Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold returned for his first full game of the season after a Week 1 injury and finished 31 of 45 for 379 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions. In contrast, Commanders backup quarterback Marcus Mariota completed 19 of 31 passes for 183 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. He started in place of injured quarterback Jayden Daniels. The Commanders also forced three Seattle turnovers while committing none.

The Seahawks dominated their opponents in both offense and defense, outgaining Washington 437-265 in total yards and held a 28-17 edge in first downs. According to data from SumerSports, Seattle posted an 86th-percentile offensive success rate and an 89th-percentile defensive success rate. It was the only loss by a team exceeding the 85th percentile in both categories since 2022, making the Seahawks win an unwanted record.

The decisive sequence came with the Seahawks trailing 27-24. Darnold’s pass over the middle intended for tight end AJ Barner was intercepted by linebacker Kain Medrano, who returned it 50 yards for a touchdown with 3:57 remaining, making the score 33-24 after a failed extra-point attempt due to a penalty. Darnold responded with a quick drive capped by a 7-yard touchdown pass to Cooper Kupp, but Washington ran out the clock. The head coach spoke about the loss after the game.

The loss was quite unexpected for everyone involved, and head coach Mike Macdonald addressed it after the game. He said, “I know our team, I know what they’re made of, I know what we have. We’re going to get back to work, we’re going to get better and it’s our job as coaches too to look at it operationally.”

He added, “It’s not the result we want, but that’s a byproduct of how we approach everything. How we travel, how we get ready, how we gameplan, so we’ll look at everything, attack the heck out of it and move forward, but the guys will be great.”

The Seattle Seahawks will now focus on the next game, which is against the Los Angeles Chargers.
