Scott Phelan has spoken about his rise through the ranks of Everton after being appointed the permanent head coach of Everton Women this month.
The 38-year-old took the reins on a temporary basis in February of this year after the departure of Brian Sorensen and led the Toffees to a stronger second half of the Women’s Super League season after a poor start to the campaign.
Phelan will be supported by coach Phil Jevons, with the former Everton striker having initially returned to the club on an interim basis in February.
And while additional updates on the structure of Phelan’s backroom staff are still yet to be confirmed, the new structure with the Blues will certainly have a more traditional Everton feel to it, something that can only help the team’s younger stars, with the boss himself having come through, and worked with, the youth system.
“I started at the club at eight years of age at Bellefield, the old training ground,” he said. “Stayed with the boys in the academy, signed professional when I was 17 and then got released at 19.

“I continued to play until I was 24 and then got an opportunity to return as a coach with academy with the boys. I worked my way through the age groups from ten to 18, and now I have this opportunity to work with one of the seniors team at the club and that is amazing opportunity for me.
“Maybe there is a moment to reflect on all the hard work I’ve put in but also the sacrifices others around me have put in and the support they have given me.
“It has definitely helped me developed and, thankfully, an amazing opportunity has arrived at this point.”

Everton’s Academy Player of the Year in 2005 and former captain of the Blues’ Under-21s, Phelan made an impressive start as the Blues’ caretaker boss, guiding Everton to three consecutive league victories – away to London City Lionesses and Tottenham, while seeing off West Ham United at Goodison Park.
No stranger to playing, spells at Bradford City and Halifax Town in the midfield led Phelan back to his boyhood club and ultimately to the Everton Women hotseat.
And his no-nonsense approach to coaching and straight-talking style has become a welcome change to the Goodison Park faithful, who have been long overdue a team that is capable of competing at the top end of the table.
