The Indianapolis Colts have yet to earn their first win, but Sauce Gardner doesn’t want to hear any talk about progress.

With an overtime defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs by the score of 33-30 having gone down the drain, the cornerback made it plain that “progress” means nothing if you aren’t winning. The Colts had a legitimate shot at beating the Chiefs last Sunday night, and the veteran corner would like the focus to remain on getting victories.

Gardner’s frustration comes from how close the Colts came to changing the result. They were competitive deep into the night against the Chiefs and had the ball in overtime with a chance to end the game.

Instead, the Colts settled for a field goal, allowing Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs to get another possession. Harrison Butker then ended the game with a 40-yard field goal as time expired.

This time, there was much more to replay. The Colts were within one possession for much of the closing stages, and every missed opportunity carried more weight. Gardner knows those moments can stick with players after a game like this.

That is why Gardner pushed back on the idea of simply pointing to progress after the loss. The message was blunt. Playing a better game than the previous week does not change the standings. The Colts are still 0-2, and the losing streak has now reached nine games dating back to last season.

There were also individual moments that could have changed Sunday’s result. Gardner nearly came away with an interception on Mahomes during the game, getting his hands on a pass but failing to secure it. The Chiefs eventually continued their drive, adding another field goal.

Then came the overtime sequence. After a 48-yard connection between Daniel Jones and Laquon Treadwell was confirmed as a catch following review, Indianapolis reached the Kansas City 17-yard line. Head coach Shane Steichen chose to put the ball in Jonathan Taylor’s hands twice; however, those runs produced losses of one and two yards.

The Colts eventually faced fourth-and-eight and decided against running their planned play when the Chiefs did not give them the look they wanted. Spencer Shrader tied the game; however, Mahomes had more than three minutes to answer.

For Gardner, that is the part that matters most now. The Colts showed they could stay in the fight against the Chiefs; however, the final score still read 33-30, and the 25-year-old standard is clear: progress can wait.
