Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight standouts Quillan Salkilld vs. Mateusz Gamrot will clash TONIGHT (Sat., Aug. 8, 2026) inside Meta Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, for UFC Vegas 120.

Salkilld is the brightest Australian prospect in quite some time. In less than two years on UFC’s roster, Salkilld has racked up five wins and four stoppages, showing off a diverse set of skills in the process. Already ranked in the Top 10 per Meta’s rankings, Salkilld could be closer to a title shot than anybody realizes. That said, Gamrot is an easy fight for no man. “Gamer” is happy to play the gritty veteran role, and he has plenty of experience in five-round fights. This is a step up for Salkilld, as well as a chance for Gamrot to build momentum in his own title push.

Let’s take a closer look at the betting odds and strategic keys for each athlete:

Salkilld Wins

Salkilld has skills everywhere, but really impresses with his ability to mix it up while following a gameplan. I still go back to that dramatic high kick of Nasrat Haqparast as a picture-perfect performance (re-live it here): against a boxer with quick hands, Salkilld spammed kicks and takedowns to deny the pocket entirely, and then his shin found the chin.

A big, strong physical talent who can follow a game plan is a dangerous combination.

Against Gamrot, Salkilld will have to resist his instincts to grapple. The Aussie likes to dominate, to impose his will on his opponents. Often, that means finishing a combination with a takedown. Or, if he’s taken down, Salkilld is the type who will scramble and wrestle hard to reverse position. Generally, these are great traits, but that’s not the game to play versus Gamrot.

Instead, Salkilld has to focus on damage and wearing down Gamrot. Compare, for a moment, Gamrot’s bouts versus Arman Tsarukyan and Dan Hooker. In the former, Gamrot was able to wrestle for very long periods of the fight, and thus he actually finished strong versus a young physical force. In the latter, Gamrot gassed out in the face of Hooker’s stabbing front kicks and relentless pressure, losing the second and third rounds after a solid start.

The solution is clear: Salkilld has to pressure, deny takedowns and hit the body often to wear down Gamrot and impose his own physical advantages.

Gamrot is one of the division’s best wrestlers, capable of both timing the perfect double and chain wrestling in the kind of technical fashion that eventually bundles up good opponents. On the feet, Gamrot is a switch-hitter who relies on straight punches and active kicks to stay busy until the takedown materializes.

The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt has finished 14 of his 26 wins.

Gamrot has to make this a wrestling match. He’s smooth enough to compete with Salkilld on the feet, but his opponent is significantly more dangerous in that regard. He doesn’t want to be trading punches with Salkilld, the more varied and powerful hitter.

Fortunately, Salkilld likes to scramble. His wrestling style is smooth and well-tuned to mixed martial arts (MMA), but it doesn’t have the technical depth of Gamrot. If Gamrot is shooting often, he should be able to convince Salkilld to start engaging in that realm, and that’s a real opening for the Polish veteran.

It’s one thing to bully an opponent with some takedowns across 15 minutes. It’s an entirely different task to keep up with a highly skilled wrestler for five full rounds.

Skilled, strong and smart, Salkilld is a quality prospect. When we look back at his wins, however, we have to admit he’s never faced anybody remotely near the skills of Gamrot. Beneil Dariushwas a great wrestler and grappler, but nowadays his chin is too fragile to seriously consider as an analogue for the durable “Gamer.”

Gamrot may be 35, but I’ve yet to see evidence of a falloff. Against a willing grappler, I expect Gamrot to find his takedowns and force a brutal pace, one Salkilld has never experienced before.

It’ll be a great learning lesson in the long run.
