Ryan Hampton recruiting profile

A lot of Big Blue Nation is still on cloud nine after landing Milan Momcilovic, and rightfully so, but as we all know, recruiting never stops. Kentucky Basketball will be hosting a special player in the coming days, and a player that the staff has been a fan of for over a year now.

Ryan Hampton is a top-10 player in the class of 2027. Hampton currently plays at DME Academy in Daytona Beach, Florida, and is highly sought after by Kentucky and many other top programs.

Originally from Rockwall, Texas, Hampton has continued to rise over the years and expand his game. This staff has made him a priority for a while and will now be getting Hampton on campus for a visit, June 5-7, as reported by Eric Bossi of 247 Sports.

Hampton considered reclassifying up into the 2026 class and speeding up the process, but decided to stay put in his original class of 2027. Had he moved into this year’s class, he very likely would not have ended up at Kentucky, so the news that he’d stay in 2027 was music to Mark Pope’s ear.

Hampton is ranked sixth overall in his class in 247 rankings, and you’ll find him around that spot wherever you look at the recruiting rankings. Listed as a shooting guard by some and a small forward by others, a wing really covers it, but a bucket getter by all.

A crafty, bouncy, go-getter type of scorer is what you’ll notice about Hampton’s game. He can knock down shots and uses his length as well as anyone in the class. His 6-foot-6 frame makes him a difficult matchup for anyone he matches up against.

As seen in this video, Hampton is often on balance, but he’s still under control when not balanced; he’s smooth, and he plays with a level of intensity that not a ton of kids show and can back up. Hampton uses his length to rise up above defenders and knock down shots from all over, but is truly at his best when getting downhill and uses his quickness and finishing ability to put points on the board.

A pitch that Kentucky could consider is how well Otega Oweh did at Kentucky. Obviously, by looking at the two players, they don’t necessarily look similar physically, with Hampton being slimmer and Oweh having more of a bruiser-type body. But the two play similar roles at similar heights, with Hampton being a couple of inches taller, and play similarly. Both players are capable shooters, but are at their best when in control and headed towards the basket. Both players play well in transition and finish really well around the rim.

Hampton is playing with the Nightrydas and just recently led his AAU squad to a 4-0 record at EYBL Kansas City. He averaged 21 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per game while in Kansas City.

Kentucky’s lead recruiter for quite some time with Hampton was Alvin Brooks III, who just took a job under Coach Justin Gainey in his first year at NC State. Mo Williams, in his first year on staff at Kentucky, has taken over the recruitment of the prized wing in this upcoming class.

Kentucky struggled big time with the class of 2026 and kept all its eggs in one basket with the No. 1 player, Tyran Stokes. Many suggest that the Wildcats could have landed multiple players other than Stokes if they had pivoted earlier in the process. The class of 2027 could be different and help get the program back on track in high school recruiting. The staff has watched and offered more than a few players in this class, so the net has been cast wide.

It’s still too early to tell, but it seems as of right now, LSU may be the early favorite, as Will Wade was recruiting Hampton at NC State prior to making the move to Baton Rouge. Kentucky will certainly be in the mix for Hampton, and getting a visit from him is a huge first step.

When asked about what he is looking for in a coach, Haptom said the following to Tristan Pharis:

“A coach that gets on me every single day, that’s not going to sugarcoat it for me.” Hampton followed that up with “Just wants me to be a good player on the court, but a better person off the court.”

John Calipari recruited Ryan’s older brother, RJ, when he was coming up in the class of 2019. RJ Hampton would ultimately choose a different route, going overseas instead of playing at any college.

Nearly a decade later, Mark Pope has the opportunity to do something the previous coach couldn’t do: get a Hampton in the blue and white.
