Ryan Fox withdraws from 3M Open after winning Open Championship

To the surprise of no one, Ryan Fox will no longer be making the trip to Blaine this week.

Fox was originally in the 3M Open field when it was announced Friday evening, but withdrew after he won the Open Championship — his first career major title (and first career top-15 finish at a major) — at Royal Birkdale in England on Sunday.

It’s customary for players who win major championships to skip at least the following week’s event in the name of celebration. The 39 year old from New Zealand no longer has any need for season-long points and his position on the PGA Tour is secure.

So while it would’ve been a major boon for the tournament to welcome the most recent major champion to Minnesota, Fox’s plans changed the moment his winning birdie putt dropped into the cup on the 18th green on Sunday.

Fox’s lone appearance at TPC Twin Cities came in 2023, when he missed the cut.
