Ryan Day changes up tradition for Ohio State seniors

Another Ohio State football tradition is being shaken up. Senior Day has been a way to honor those young men who have given four years of blood, sweat, and tears to the Scarlet and Gray. Historically, those being honored would be announced before the final home game of the season. One last run through the tunnel meant to be an emotional lift and bring a final victory on the home turf.

That moment was supposed to take place before the Michigan game on November 28, but that will not be the case this year. As with several traditions, Ryan Day has decided to change things up a bit. Senior Day will happen before the first game of the season when the Buckeyes take on Ball State on September 5.

The festivities will coincide with Ohio State honoring legendary head coach Jim Tressel, who led the Buckeyes to the 2002 National Championship. Tressel will be inducted into the Ring of Honor at Ohio Stadium.

Something new this season for Ohio State, the Senior Day ceremony will take place before the home-opener.

We’ve seen a few teams do this in college football, moving the ceremony off the final game.

There will be no shortage of opinions on the impending change. However, it’s most likely being done to eliminate distractions when it comes to facing the Maize and Blue. Last year, Day moved the marching band’s annual practice in front of the team off of rivalry week. Day also had the team fly to Ann Arbor when it had been tradition to take a bus for the 190-mile trip.

The changes seemed to work last year. And something tells me that as long as Ohio State comes out on top of the Wolverines, I don’t think too many people will mind the slight change in tradition.
